We're hiring a UI/UX designer, and more

WowUtils is run by two people and funded by subscriptions and supporters. Nearly everything the platform earns goes back into it, and the next step is bringing in a few people on a contract basis. Scoped tickets, a larger project, or a monthly arrangement, whatever fits the work. We agree scope and price up front, you deliver, we pay.

If you use the site every week, you already know more about what it needs than most applicants will. That's exactly who we'd like to hear from.

UI/UX designer

The big one. Neither of us (Penkek and Viserio) has a UI/UX or frontend background. We've gotten a lot better at it over the years, but the feedback is clear and we feel the friction ourselves. What we don't have is a clear path to doing it properly, and to making sure everything we build from here on is better by default. We want someone with a vision for that, and we'll give them the room to make a large impact.

Concretely: a polished UI/UX improvement across the whole site, one coherent whole where the tools connect properly, not isolated fixes. We ship incrementally, so it needs to land in steps, but those steps should follow a long-term plan you own. The target is to have it shipped before the next raid tier, roughly 3-4 months.

We're looking for someone with substantial time available and an opinion. You'll need to understand how the site is actually used, from RWF and hardcore guilds through semi-hardcore and mediumcore, and make calls on what each of them needs.

You get a test guild, a ticket board, and a direct line to both of us. No coding required; Figma is the deliverable. Having run or raided in a guild on the site is a strong plus. This is a side-gig, not a 40-hour week. We're thinking of a monthly arrangement in the €1500-2500 range, depending on how much time you can put in and what we agree on. That's a significant share of what the platform makes, so we want to spend it on the right person.

Discord bot developer

For Baldio, our Discord bot, written in C#. Work is per feature, scoped and priced together. There's a monthly budget for this, so bigger features get spread over time. Strong preference for someone whose guild already uses Baldio, or who has at least tried it. Building something you use yourself matters to us.

Video

Short 1-2 minute clips for major updates, starting with the addon. Details depend on what fits you (your channel? ours?), and we're happy to talk it through.

Community

We could use help from people who know a part of the WoW community we don't reach well, whether that's a region (KR, CN and Latin America come to mind, but not only those), a language, or a type of guild we're not serving properly. Help us understand what the site needs to do for them and how to get it in front of them. We're also open to help with support in our Discord, or anything else you think we're missing. Nothing is fixed on any of this yet, so get in touch and we'll talk.

How to apply

Mail [email protected] with the role in the subject: [Design], [Baldio], [Video] or [Community].

For the design role, include:

  • examples of your work
  • a short written piece on what you think the site's biggest shortcomings are and what you'd do about them. Half a page is plenty, and it matters more to us than the portfolio.
  • roughly how many hours a week you could put in

For the other roles, relevant work examples are enough. You'll need to be able to invoice us.

Mail rather than DMs please, so nothing gets lost. And if you know someone who'd be a good fit, send this their way. If the platform keeps growing, there will be more of these.
